Your entry hall is the first thing most people see when they enter your home. You want the first impression of your home to be positive and welcoming. The decor should also reflect your personality and your taste. It is easy to achieve a warm and inviting feel.

An unorganized, messy or shabby space is not the image you want to present to visitors when they first come to your home. Clean up clutter, fix or remove items that are in disrepair, change dead light bulbs, and freshen up your walls with a new coat of paint. These are simple ways to create a good first impression.

You want the decorating style that is in the rest of the home to also be present in your entry hall. This is easily accomplished by using finishes and accessories that compliment the decor in the rest of the house. For example, if your home has a Tuscan flair, start with a wall color in a warm, rich tone. Add wrought iron sconces and a mirror with a metal frame to the walls. Finish the look by placing a rustic console table in the entry.

There are many comfortable touches that you can add to your entry hall. First, a chair or bench will provide a good place to rest or pull on boots. A table to hold mail, keys and collectibles is also a useful addition to the space. If there is not enough room for a table or chest, a shelf will work as well. An umbrella holder, coat hooks on the wall, or a coat rack, provide an accessible place to store guest’s belongings. A clock for the wall, tabletop or shelf will advise of the time. Items like these will provide organization and comfort to the foyer.

A mirror is a great idea, for vanity and to enlarge the feel of the space. A mirror can also bring more light into a darker area. A new area rug, matching accessories, such as candle holders with coordinated candles, sconces on the wall or vases filled with fresh flowers will complete the look of the space. Large vases on the floor with arrangements will add a finishing touch.

Overall, a few thoughtful touches will bring a warm and inviting atmosphere to your entry. It is worth taking a second look at your entry hall to make sure it is reflecting the first impression you want to give to your visitors.… READ MORE

Do you hate the look or color of your worn or outdated bathtub or sink? Re-finish it yourself! My Mother, the woman who can do anything, seems to know everything (or will go out of her way to find out the answer) had a tub in her main bath that she just couldn’t stand any longer.

The old tub had a scratched and worn surface that made all of her decorating in that bath seem “shabby” despite it’s colorful elegance. She kept the shower curtain closed just to hide the ugly thing! She decided that since bringing in a professional to re-paint it for her was going to cost more than she wanted to spend, with a little research, she found a product that allowed her to give it a brilliant, fresh finish for just $15.00

Popular Home Improvement stores now carry re-finishing kits that you can do yourself. This is a two day project as it requires 2 coats. It’s self leveling and looks like a brand new tub!

My biggest recommendation when re-finishing tubs, tile, counter tops, etc is to tape, tape, TAPE!!!! You need to protect surrounding areas to prevent product from being applied to those areas as well by mistake. When taping off an area, I apply blue painters tape and then “burnish” it with a tablespoon from the kitchen. This helps to “seal” the tape edges so that product or paint doesn’t slip up underneath (a problem we have ALL experienced before).

The thing about being a “do it yourself ” person is that you MUST be willing to have patience and to do it right, not rushing through the project or the outcome will be less than what you had hoped for, which is not only a waste of money, but of your precious time as well. We CAN do these projects and we CAN get spectacular, professional results!

In my younger days, I used to rush through projects like this, thinking I could speed the process along by skipping bits of the instructions that didn’t seem important, or not taking the time to pre-prep or tape surrounding areas effectively. After years of being disappointed with my own “do it yourself” projects, I finally learned. So do take your time, relax and don’t worry if a project “takes two coats” or it takes a few days to cure and harden. That’s a small price to pay for a project you will be completely delighted with and will last you for years to come.… READ MORE

Ornaments are great inexpensive weapons. They can fully transform the look and feel of a room if you apply a little strategy when you’re out and about shopping. Shell out on shelves

Shelving can be found at practically every home store, and it adds a nice touch to an uninspired bathroom. Shelves come in a range of materials, colours, shapes, and sizes. With a little effort, you can totally change the look of your bathroom. Probably the best thing about shelves is their price. Many stores offer shelving at very reasonable prices, allowing you to transform your bathroom without transforming your wallet (too much).

Mix it up with mirrors

Mirrors are an essential item for every bathroom. Without them, A&E would be inundated with not-so-pretty sight of shaving accident victims. Mirrors are also useful for mixing things up a little. The style, shaping, and size of mirrors are endless. You can even make your own if you have a creative flair and time on your hands. Plus, mirrored glass is as cheap as chips.

Heated towel rails

These are a little more expensive than the other items listed here, but then again, they are pretty awesome. They come in mainly silver and chrome finishes, so they are perfect for modernising your bathroom, or adding an extra modern touch to your current modernised bathroom. They also heat your towels and your bathroom, which in winter is a luxury that shouldn’t be overlooked.… READ MORE
